The photography exhibit "Ghost Ships of the Wisconsin Schooner Coast" opens Saturday in the Reddin Bridge Room at the Door County Maritime Museum. It features the work of Dennis Mullen, who is particularly noted for his underwater and nature photography. Mullen is an accomplished diver, with more than 1,000 dives logged. In addition to his extensive Great Lakes experience, he returns every winter to dive the waters of Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela. Mullen's sophisticated photographic style incorporates subject, surroundings, composition and exposure to create compelling images. The exhibit is described as a virtual dive experience through Mullen's photography.
The Wisconsin Schooner Coast of the exhibit's title is a cooperative marketing effort the maritime museum recently entered with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. The show is presented by the Neptune's Dive Club of Green Bay in conjunction with the museum. "Some of the most significant shipwrecks off the Lake Michigan coast are featured in the exhibit," said Bob Desh, DCMM executive director. "It highlights the rich maritime history of the 60-mile stretch along the Lake Michigan coastline and the quaint port towns of Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Kewaunee, Algoma and Sturgeon Bay. This is one of the first programs being offered by this cooperative effort with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum."
The photos are on display in the museum's Sturgeon Bay headquarters location through July 5 before moving to the satellite museum in Gills Rock for display through Oct. 16. The Door County Maritime Museum is at 120 N. Madison Ave., Sturgeon Bay. Regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until Memorial Day weekend, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the summer season. Admission to the museum only is $8 for adults, $4 ages 5-17; $12.50 for adults and $9 ages 5-17 includes museum admission and a docent-led tour of the tug John Purves, docked outside the museum.
